A Father. An Adventurer.

Tim Kent is a father, an experienced sailor and adventurer, known for his remarkable journey in solo offshore racing. In October 2027, he will embark on the Global Solo Challenge, a demanding non-stop race around the world that will begin and end in Vigo, Spain, lasting over four and a half months at sea.

A Proven Offshore Racer.

Tim previously competed in the 2002/2003 Around Alone Race, a solo circumnavigation race, where he made history as its oldest finisher at the age of 50. With a rich background in educational publishing and a lifelong passion for sailing, Tim launched his racing career in the Great Lakes from his home base in Milwaukee.

Onward to the Global Solo Challenge.

His dedication to the sport led him to self-fund his first around-the-world race, where he unexpectedly finished second in his class, solidifying his reputation in the global solo sailing community. Now comes a bigger challenge – solo nonstop around the world.

Training for the world's toughest race

To successfully prepare for a short-handed or solo sailing race, one must master various disciplines. Key skills include practical and satellite navigation, advanced weather forecasting, and the ability to perform regular preventative maintenance and emergency repairs while underway. These skills are best developed through hands-on experience in real conditions - this is why the same condition(s) training is a key part of Kent Racing.

Books That Inspire

Sailors love our sport in part because of the many characters with whom we sail and who take up and make up the space around us at our marinas, clubs, race courses, and cruising grounds. Take a little time to read about the characters who have defined the edges of our sport, have made some sort of crazy history, or have taken risks offshore that most sailors would rather read about. This is a list of twenty-six of my favorite books that play out on the water.

I firmly believe that most great stories are love stories of some kind. Each of these is a love story…of the sea, of competition, of others, of the devotion to the unwritten laws of the sea, of the heart, of duty, or of the question humans have asked endlessly since they first pushed off for an unseen shore…can I do this?

A Boat Shaped Mind by Tim Kent

A Boat Shaped Mind

With little ocean sailing experience, a thin budget and a lot of friends, Wisconsin sailor Tim Kent set his eyes on the longest race in the world for an individual: a solo yacht race around the planet. 27,000 miles alone. The story of how a 50-year-old book salesman from the Great Lakes raced solo around the world in the Around Alone Race is harrowing, funny and inspirational. And when the game was repeatedly on the line, he showed how one person’s determination to return home to his children, his friends and his anchored world can overcome fearsome challenges.
